A lasso is the main working tool of a Nenets reindeer herder. It is a long rope woven from four belts made of reindeer or sea animal skin (mainly the bearded seal). In its final form, the woven belt has a smooth rounded shape about the thickness of a pencil. Usually, a reindeer herder determines the thickness and length of his tynzei based on his physical capabilities and skills.
The skill of throwing a tynzei is always highly valued among reindeer herders. Some shepherds can throw a tynzey both with the right and the left hands. There are only a few reindeer herders possessing such a high-level skill. Shepherds use a tynzei not only to catch reindeer but also as a rope to fasten things on sledges.
