A malitsa is Nenets men's garment sewn from reindeer skins with fur inside. It resembles a spacious shirt reaching to the knees and shorter in the front. In all areas of the Nenets settlements (except for the Kanin Peninsula and Kolguev Island) a malitsa has a sewn-on hood that serves as a cap. Mittens with the fur outside are tightly sewn to malitsa sleeves.
For a long time, many Nenets wear broadcloth shirts of different colours over a malitsa to protect it from humidity, dirt and the sun. In a reindeer herder wardrobe, there are usually 3-4 malitsas for all occasions.
The Nenets call a malitsa an individual chum because it reliably protects a person from the cold like a chum and they even compounded the following riddle about this garment: “You enter through one hole - leave through three”.
