Men’s pims are the Nenets national footwear. Special attention is paid to the creation of men’s shoes because a man spends time outside more than any other family member, so the skins are processed and prepared by the Nenets craftswomen long before the start of sewing.
These shoes are sewn by hand from a reindeer skin removed from the feet, this material is called kamus. Up to ten kamuses are needed for a pair of pimas.
The Nenets take great care of footwear, they wear them for 5-7 years or more. Each man necessarily has 2-3 pairs, which can be inherited. There are pimas that are part of the funeral garments, a tundra resident goes to the lower world with them. There are also holiday pimas that can serve a lifetime.
